Butterfly Habitat: 60+ Caterpillars & Counting

This month, our butterfly habitat has been full of life — with more than 60 caterpillars making their way through the garden!

Milkweed has become one of the busiest plants in our garden. We’ve been able to watch caterpillars grow day by day, observe their different stages, and even catch those exciting moments when they begin preparing to form a chrysalis.

Having so many caterpillars at once has also been a wonderful lesson in just how much food a butterfly garden needs. Caterpillars can eat an incredible amount of milkweed, reminding us that creating habitat isn't simply about attracting butterflies — it's about growing enough host plants to support their entire life cycle.

For the kids, the garden has become a living science lesson. They can observe the butterfly life cycle happening right in front of them: egg → caterpillar → chrysalis → butterfly.

With so many hungry caterpillars, we are always grateful for milkweed donations! If you have extra milkweed to share, you’re welcome to donate it to our butterfly habitat — or bring a milkweed plant and help us plant it in the garden. Every plant helps us provide more food and habitat for the butterflies we are raising and protecting.

More than 60 caterpillars in one month means a lot of hungry little mouths, a lot of milkweed, and hopefully many beautiful butterflies ahead.
